This is betula papyrifera, also known as White Birch, Paper Birch, American White Birch, and Canoe Birch. This tree grows in the sun or partial shade and blooms in the middle of the Spring. The sap can be collected from this tree to make several different things including, sweet syrup, beer, wine, and soft drinks. You can eat the inner bark which is tender enough to chew in a survival situation. This tree is larval host to several different moths, including the Luna moth, Early Juniper Carpet Moth, and Columbia silkmoth. It is also a larval host plant to the Compton Tortoiseshell, Canadian Tiger Swallowtail, and Mourning Cloak butterflies. USDA Hardiness Zones 2 to 9
