The pods and leaves of this plant contain powerful laxatives called anthraquinones; For this reason many plant eating animals will not eat this one. This is the only known larval host plant for the Orange-barred Sulphur. It is also the larval host plant for the Mercurial Skipper, Tailed Orange, Cloudless Sulphur and Sleepy Orange butterflies.
